They Can't Be Serious, Can They?

Starting in January 2010 three British Holiday Inns will offer a new service - human bed-warmers. Upon request, a staff member - dressed in a one-piece, fleece sleeper suit and with hair covered - will lie in a guest's bed until it is warm - 68 degrees Fahrenheit when tested with a thermometer. Holiday Inn is promoting this trial service with help from the director of the Edinburgh Sleep Center, who says a cold bed inhibits sleep. Although this service is performed when quests aren't present, the hot water Holiday Inn could get into could fill three-inns-worth of hot water bottles.

Also as of January 2010 Nevada has its first male prostitute. The owners of the Shady Lady Ranch had to get county and state approval before hiring the first legal "prostidude" in the U.S. Before being prevented from doing interviews, "Marcus" described himself as a 25-year-old, well-read, college dropout and former Marine from Alabama, who became homeless after a brief stint as a porn actor in Los Angeles. According to the brothel's madam, hundreds of applications were received and 10 men were interviewed. Supposedly part of Marcus' appeal is his ability to take heavy publicity - probably lying down.

In the fall of 2010 dogs will be able to tweet. Mattel is introducing "Puppy Tweets", a plastic tag with a sound and motion sensor. For $29.99 dog owners can attach the tag to their dog's collar, connect its USB receiver to their computer and open a Twitter account for their pet. The tag is set with pre-recorded tweets triggered by a dog's activities. For example, if Rover is roughhousing, he will tweet, "YAHOOOOOOO! Some days you just gotta get your bark on". However, because there's no Kitty Tweets for cat owners, they won't be receiving "catcalls".

Finally, starting in February 2011 smoking in outdoor cafes in Los Angeles will be banned. The ban, unanimously passed by the City Council, makes it illegal to smoke within a 10-foot radius of restaurants. Smoking within a 40-foot radius of mobile food trucks, food carts and food kiosks will also be banned. Los Angeles already bans smoking at beaches, parks and within 25 feet of playgrounds, bleachers, sports fields and picnic areas. However, bars and nightclubs that require customers to be 18 years old or older are exempt from all bans. Those establishments seem to be protected by some sort of smoke screen.
